Storyteller By Savanna Roberts

First I want to start this by saying that Savanna Roberts has not only become one of my favorite authors in this season of my life but she’s also become one of my friends thanks to the bookstagram community, she’s over all such a sweet soul and everyone should read her books!

I was fortunate enough to read an advanced copy of Storyteller which is the second book in Quelmirian Duology and I’m so so so happy with how this Duology ended.

If you’ve read my review of the first book (Villager) you know how much I liked this story to begin with, Savanna has a talent for making the story flow without making it feel too rushed or too slow.

The freaking Character Development UGH I love it so much. Viviana, Nex, Tyde, Tina, and Reeve all grow so much in this book I don’t know how Savanna managed it but wow I some how loved them all so much more. Without giving any spoilers, I want to say that the resolution to the problem in this story was definitely well thought out and the ending gives the world room to grow and you can just feel the happiness at the end of this.

Now, I will say – I cried. Ohhhh this book made me cry at one point (Savanna how dare you, you genius) I made the mistake of finishing it on my way home while on public transport and I had to try sooooo hard to hold it in so people wouldn’t think I was crazy haha this book also made me laugh, smile, and got to my heart.

The characters are all very likable and the villainous rival was well done – and mean as all hell.

This is a story about adventure, hope and even forgiveness.

I absolutely loved this duology and im very happy that it got such a beautiful ending.

Over all 4/5 stars and would definitely recommend!

Support indie authors ya’ll

The Girl The Sea Gave Back

The Stones Don’t Lie

The Girl The Sea Gave Back by Adrienne Young has to be one of my favorite books of 2019. There are so many reasons to love this book and this wasn’t even a tough decision to make when trying to review it. – 5 out of 5 stars – I was fortunate enough to receive and ARC of Sea from Netgalley so before I get into it I want to thank Netgalley and Wednesday Books!

Now I do want to say one thing before I get into my review, I have heard a couple people aren’t happy with this book and in its defense I want to say – Stop comparing it to Sky In The Deep. Sea is also set in the same universe as Sky but in no way is it the same type of story. Sea is definitely more character centered than Sky so the events that play out in Sea are not as fast paced. Also both are very different characters and Tova is by no means a warrior and it’s pretty clear from the start.

NOW, that being said, I want to give you my reasons for loving this book SO much. This story was such a visually appealing story to me, Tova’s ability to read the stones and notice the omens was actually a really good build up of the story in my opinion. I also felt like the mysticism in this book was done so well I could basically see it all playing out in my head as I was reading it. As a reader I feel like the pace of the story was fine for the kind of story this was, again its not about the actually fighting this is story of a people who grew too big and too powerful and to say it plainly, got too chummy.

What lies in the future for the Svell?

In the future, there are no Svell.

I want to dive into the characters of course, to start off – Tova. She is a character that has grown up difficultly, hated and feared but has also grown up fearing for her own life. She IS strong but not in the way most people I think want her to be. Her ability is of course super cool and I loved her chapters because she is more of an inward character than she is an outward character because shes had to internalize everything. Even the man who practically raised her, Jorrund, wouldn’t truly defend her before his own people. The details in her chapters were also my favorite – The Spinners, the Nighthawk, her stones and their meaning – it was all very interesting and watching from her perspective how the people of the Svell fall into their own destiny trying to avoid it was , to be honest, very entertaining to me.

Halvard and the Nadhir- aka my faves – I was of course rooting for them the whole time during this story and what can I even say about Halvard as a character? His whole story and his internal turmoil about having to some day lead his clan and the problems ahead just made his character all the more admirable, if that makes sense? I just really loved Halvard (wait till you read the fight scenes holy crap) I love that regardless of the fact that he has to lead these people and pretty much doesn’t want to he steps up and not only fights a long side them but he’s also not a tyrant when he had all the opportunity to be one. There are of course other characters in the story like The Kyrr (who btw are terrifying? Yeah just wanted to add that in there. They aren’t messing around) Halvards family – who I love because of reasons. Adrienne Young has such a smooth way of bringing everything and everyone together by the end of it in my opinion, catch me reading her books forever.

Augua ór tivar. Ljá mir sýn.

Eye of the gods. Give me Sight.

The world building is without a doubt one of my favorites!! The whole Mythology of the gods and the spinners was done so well. From the language to the stories of the spinners, the omens and the nighthawk. Tova’s visions and even and did I mention the spinners? The. Fight. Scenes. oh my wOW. I’m a sucker for a good battle scene and this book did not disappoint me!! I want to quote one so bad but I won’t spoil it. Over all The Girl The Sea Gave Back impressed me thoroughly and Adrienne Young has me forever.

Just please please please remember that this book is not a continuation of the events in Sky this is simply in the same world and of course the events in Sky are mentioned and some characters are involved but don’t judge this one based off of that one. The Girl The Sea Gave Back gets 5 starts from me and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone who loves fantasy and vikings!

A Shifting of Stars

Her Stars have Shifted to a new uncharted universe, and so have mine

A Shifting of Stars – Kathy Kimbray

Hey everyone! Today I’m going to try to keep my cool because A Shifting of Stars got me messed.up. This is a book that everyone needs to read! Kathy Kimbray really killed me with this one and I know that in the future her books are definitely going to be on my shelves for years to come.

Let’s get into to the deets not shall we. whats this book about? well here’s the synopsis :

A squandering emperor. A handsome stranger. A reluctant heroine. And the ancient magic that will capsize a kingdom.

Seventeen-year-old Meadow Sircha watched her mother die from the wilting sickness. Tormented by the knowledge that the emperor failed to import the medicine that would have saved her, she speaks out at a gathering of villagers, inciting them to boycott his prized gladiator tournament.

But doing so comes at a steep cost.

Arrested as punishment for her impulsive tongue, Meadow finds herself caught up in the kind of danger she’s always tried to avoid. After a chance meeting with an enigmatic boy, she’s propelled on a perilous trek across the outer lands. But she soon unearths a staggering secret: one that will shift her world—and the kingdom—forever.

Let me point out the fact that ‘reluctant heroine’ is not an exaggeration in the slightest! Meadow just wants to chill and live her life in her stone brick home with her father, that should be tough right? Wrong. Meadow gets her self into trouble and to be completely honest, she makes me laugh! in an endearing way not in a ‘haha loser’ way its more of a lol Meadow shut up for a sec and listen! but she just does know how to! haha I love that she needs to asks questions about everything! I read the Ebook and i”m pretty sure I highlighted most of the interactions with her millions questions I just found them so funny lol

Now, world building. This story has a pretty solid put together world. It speaks of different provinces, previous emperors, a forest no one will enter, the palace and even the wilderness out side of the towns. The Map in this book is also really beautiful and pretty easy to follow along if you’re like me and you like to look back at the map. I would say over all the world building does it for me and I’m excited to see what else we’ll get from this world in the next book.

Characters! All the characters felt pretty concrete as well I gotta say. Even side characters had stories, lives, pasts and fears. I’ve say Kathy Kimbray thought this story out really thoroughly. One thing with the characters, just one tiny thing- the names. I really wasn’t a fan of most of the names except for Meadows. The ‘Handsome Stranger’ in the synopsis I loved I absolutely loved but his name was the one thing that I was not a huge fan of. It didn’t get in the way of my reading in thr slightest – the story is just THAT good- just its just something I wanted to comment on.

Also just a reminder this story is a fantasy but also counts as a mystery. The reason I say that is because once I realized it also counted as a mystery I kinda sat back like oooooh it all clicks now okay. That could also be my fault cause i’ve been on a high fantasy kick and I forget other genres exists when I get like this lol oops and I can’t forget to comment on the fact that Kathy Kimbray is a sweet heart you should absolutely go follow her on twitter and IG! being on the street team for this book was actually pretty unexpected and I don’t remember how I stumbled upon it but those are the best adventures I guess!

Over all give this story 4 stars out of 5! I almost gave it 5 out of 5 but the progression of the story was the only thing that helped me back from that last star cause even though at the end when I closed the book I had an absolute freak out because something happens in the book and I had no idea that was ever eveN AN OPTION!!!! (Kathy Kimbray is a genius) It just felt like SO much kept happening to poor Meadow that I was like ..please. PLEASE give her a second!! but other than that go read this book right now, as a matter of fact heres the link to go buy it

I loved a Shifting of Stars and I’m super excited for the next installment of this series. Btw here’s a graphic made by yours truly 😉

Villager By Savanna Roberts

Do you think the gods told the Kings of old what sins were just so we would always be tempted?”

Villager – Savanna Roberts

Hey everyone!! Today I have the honor of telling you all about the hidden gem that is Villager! First I want to go ahead and thank Savanna so much for giving me the chance to be on her street team for this book and for being such a kind heart! You should definitely go and give her a follow on IG andalso check her out on Goodreads! Villager is actually her third book and I’m already trying to get her other books because her writing really snuck up on me and now I can’t wait to see what other adventures she takes me on!

Villager is the first book in the Quelmirian Duology and im gonna tell you this but you’ll see it in other reviews too, put. your. seat belt. on. this ride is wild and you know what im not getting off it haha The story follows the MC Vivianna on her journey to pull her family forward after her mother abandons the family for another man, Vivianna as a character first off is such an easy likable character she follows her heart and wants the best for those around her. She accepts a job at the Quelmirian Palace and has no idea that its going to and has no idea that its going to change her life pretty drastically!

First thing I do want to mention about Villager is that the story plays out pretty smoothly. Savanna is very good at keeping the flow of the story going without adding to many unnecessary details or leaving out any important ones. Each character has their own personality and they each come with a pretty concrete backstory. I also want to mention that anything that is not addressed (which I don’t think is much) is only because those are details for the next book. Speaking of which, Savanna I need book two as soON AS POSSIBLE THANKS.

I obviously don’t want to give anything away but I will say I love prince Nex so so so much. I also of course love Vivianna, right from the beginning I love her. The story mainly follows them but of course we have a couple others, Tyde my poor nervous child, Kallimene, Princess Fiatina, and Reeve who I cannot wait to see more of in book two! (Who doesn’t like a sassy pirate?!)

Now, the actual plot of the book…vnekhbhkbdhksfjhs IM A MESS. Okay let me compose myself..but seriously It all hit me and then next thing I knew I was faced with the To Be Continued page and I was like….you’re lying…NO. And that’s pretty much all I can say without giving up too much about that.

Oh and I also want to mention how the life in the village reminds me of the villages in Skyrim and I love love love that. I love how Savanna did the fantasy in this series, it has a mix of like heavy fantasy mixed in with some newer technological aspects towards the end that I really wasn’t expecting at all and I love how it all ties in together. Over all I definitely recommend Villager or pretty much anything Savanna writes to be totally honest.

I would rate Villager 4/5 stars and if you’ve never checked out an independent author I would say to start with Savanna Roberts.

I’m very very excited for book two and I can’t wait to see how all the characters grow from the events in Villager and I’m so excited to see the Baylan Isles!! Definitely a 2019 favorite for me!

We Hunt The Flame By Hafsah Faizal

‘Be as victorious as the name I have given you, and bring the desert to its knees’

Where do I even begin with this book?! Well for starters let me say this has been, without a doubt, one of my favorite books of 2019. This book had it all : amazing characters, incredible world building, the book over all was so so so well written and if I had to describe it in one or two words I would say the book it self is absolute magic.

The main character Zafira is oh so special to me I never thought I would feel like this towards a MC after Throne of Glass was over (Celeana/Aelin was literally my book soul mate) but wow I connected to her so quickly. Especially since I know the struggles that she does with taking care of her family and stuff and the way she wants to protect everyone she loves I 100% get that as the older sibling. The other characters are SOOO well done too! They each have a concrete backstory. From their past to their personalities it feels like each point was meticulously thought about and coming from someone whose met Hafsah and heard her speaking about the book and how much she cares I can tell you I have no doubt that she thought out everything in this book to the T.

The world building and sense of adventure was amazing to me. I love fantasies that take place in the desert I feel like it always opens up to world to so much more. Ruins, marriages, whatever is living under the sand and hidden in an oasis – just the thought of those things is so exciting to me and We Hunt The Flame delivers it all.

Now that I’ve read and experienced the beauty that is We Hunt the Flame I can tell you that im so ready for book two! I was never able to get an ARC of WHTF when it was going around and I tried so so so hard but if book two has an ARC I’m just giving you all a heads up – I’m gonna fight everyone to get one lol I love this story so much I’m so glad that I picked this book up. I definitely recommend it to any lovers of Fantasy & YA and give it 5/5 stars.

I also made a print of one of Hafsah’s favorite quotes (I had asked her on IG) and took it to her when I met her and guys she is so sweet!! If you live near any of the up coming WHTF events trust me she wants to meet you go!

WHTF will always have a special place in my heart.

Sparrows (Fliers #2) – Spoilers

Hey everyone! It’s been a minute since I posted and I promise I’m going to do my best to post at least once a week from now on! I’ve done a lot of reading this passed month and I need to fill you all in on it! Lets get started on Sparrows by author Laura Mae!

Sparrows is the follow up book to Fliers and I’m so happy I got to read an ARC of it before it comes out 06/25/19. First I want to again remind everyone to help and support independent authors! A lot of the times they even have their E books for free on amazon Kindle and you never know what hidden gems you’ll find.

Sparrows – Lets start off with the awesome and the obvious. Syd is a freaking badass! The intro scene to this book when she’s going through the Sparrows initiation has me so tense! I kept telling myself it had to be some sort of Sparrows training but at the same time it had me kinda worried something had happened between book 1 and 2! (I was as you would say, Shook) One of the things I love about Syd is how all she wants is to have a nice life and be left alone but thats not gonna stop her from kicking your ass lol (Can you say lol in a review? Oh well I just did lol)

We have of course Silas, Gia and Willo from book 1 but we also have some new characters and some characters that seem to be trying to redeem themselves! Harold for one, do I wan to punch him in the face? Absolutely. Will I give him a chance to redeem himself? yeah why not but if he doesn’t I secretly hope Syd kicks his ass..Willo in this book kinda really annoys me? but I believe its mainly because we read everything form Syd’s point of view so there’s only one side to the story and one opinion I’m basing my opinion on. Silas..Silas my love (Insert crying emoji) I just want him and Syd to be happy dammit! I would also like to see him as a Sparrow in the next book kicking ass to save Syd. I really want to see more of Gia too she’s good with technology and I feel like we need some chapters from her point of to bring the team full circle (Silas too PLEASE).

New characters – The leader of the Sparrows and his wife..Honestly him I want to punch most of the time and her..I’m not SUPER in love with. Mainly because of the whole ‘Hispanic’ thing. Me being Cuban and being surrounded by my huge Hispanic family I can tell you no one talks like Avani or her sister..BUT do I want to see more of her? Yes, Why? Because her sister is a psycho and for one I can 100% get behind a Psycho character I love villains that are villains just because they’re jerks and Avani’s sister (who I cannot for the life of me remember her name now) is a HUGE jerk, love that.. and the leader of the Sparrows (who I also cannot remember his name what is wrong with me) this guy…I don’t mean to quote Twilight but your mood swings are giving me whiplash. I understand that to leader a rebel organization in a modern time where everyone is okay with the ‘secret’ genocide of an entire race has to be touch and you need a few screws loose but dude relax. The rest of the gang I did love.

You know what I love most? It feels real. No one is mystical or whatever everyone has their personalities, everyone is normal and they just want to live their normal lives.
The setting of the story I think felt just a tad slow for the development and for the ending we got. Don’t get me wrong I loved the ending we got. Syd being captured again AND seeing her father captured as well raises sooo many questions. Did the island get compromised? Was her father ever on the island to begin with? I had a theory that his letters to her might not have been totally real except that if the doctor had her address i’m pretty sure he would have snatched her up. I have a ton of questions and i’m really looking forward to seeing how this story plays out in book #3. Please Please Please give me badass Sparrow Silas Pleaseeeeee

I would have to say my rating for this is somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars i’m on the fence just cause I really wasn’t a fan of the Spanish but I’m never a fan of it in any book to be completely honest. I’m not sure what the inspiration for Avani was but as a character I would tweak a couple things. Though I do have to say the language in this one was a little more harsh than Fliers maybe because things are getting more intense and we have some characters that are quite hostile I’m not one to judge on swearing but as a reader I prefer it on the mild side.

Do I recommend Sparrows? Hell yeah I’m all here for badass female characters! If you haven’t read Fliers then what are you waiting for go read it asap cause Sparrows comes in June 25th!
