Hey everyone! It’s been a minute since I posted and I promise I’m going to do my best to post at least once a week from now on! I’ve done a lot of reading this passed month and I need to fill you all in on it! Lets get started on Sparrows by author Laura Mae!
Sparrows is the follow up book to Fliers and I’m so happy I got to read an ARC of it before it comes out 06/25/19. First I want to again remind everyone to help and support independent authors! A lot of the times they even have their E books for free on amazon Kindle and you never know what hidden gems you’ll find.
Sparrows – Lets start off with the awesome and the obvious. Syd is a freaking badass! The intro scene to this book when she’s going through the Sparrows initiation has me so tense! I kept telling myself it had to be some sort of Sparrows training but at the same time it had me kinda worried something had happened between book 1 and 2! (I was as you would say, Shook) One of the things I love about Syd is how all she wants is to have a nice life and be left alone but thats not gonna stop her from kicking your ass lol (Can you say lol in a review? Oh well I just did lol)
We have of course Silas, Gia and Willo from book 1 but we also have some new characters and some characters that seem to be trying to redeem themselves! Harold for one, do I wan to punch him in the face? Absolutely. Will I give him a chance to redeem himself? yeah why not but if he doesn’t I secretly hope Syd kicks his ass..Willo in this book kinda really annoys me? but I believe its mainly because we read everything form Syd’s point of view so there’s only one side to the story and one opinion I’m basing my opinion on. Silas..Silas my love (Insert crying emoji) I just want him and Syd to be happy dammit! I would also like to see him as a Sparrow in the next book kicking ass to save Syd. I really want to see more of Gia too she’s good with technology and I feel like we need some chapters from her point of to bring the team full circle (Silas too PLEASE).
New characters – The leader of the Sparrows and his wife..Honestly him I want to punch most of the time and her..I’m not SUPER in love with. Mainly because of the whole ‘Hispanic’ thing. Me being Cuban and being surrounded by my huge Hispanic family I can tell you no one talks like Avani or her sister..BUT do I want to see more of her? Yes, Why? Because her sister is a psycho and for one I can 100% get behind a Psycho character I love villains that are villains just because they’re jerks and Avani’s sister (who I cannot for the life of me remember her name now) is a HUGE jerk, love that.. and the leader of the Sparrows (who I also cannot remember his name what is wrong with me) this guy…I don’t mean to quote Twilight but your mood swings are giving me whiplash. I understand that to leader a rebel organization in a modern time where everyone is okay with the ‘secret’ genocide of an entire race has to be touch and you need a few screws loose but dude relax. The rest of the gang I did love.
You know what I love most? It feels real. No one is mystical or whatever everyone has their personalities, everyone is normal and they just want to live their normal lives. The setting of the story I think felt just a tad slow for the development and for the ending we got. Don’t get me wrong I loved the ending we got. Syd being captured again AND seeing her father captured as well raises sooo many questions. Did the island get compromised? Was her father ever on the island to begin with? I had a theory that his letters to her might not have been totally real except that if the doctor had her address i’m pretty sure he would have snatched her up. I have a ton of questions and i’m really looking forward to seeing how this story plays out in book #3. Please Please Please give me badass Sparrow Silas Pleaseeeeee
I would have to say my rating for this is somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars i’m on the fence just cause I really wasn’t a fan of the Spanish but I’m never a fan of it in any book to be completely honest. I’m not sure what the inspiration for Avani was but as a character I would tweak a couple things. Though I do have to say the language in this one was a little more harsh than Fliers maybe because things are getting more intense and we have some characters that are quite hostile I’m not one to judge on swearing but as a reader I prefer it on the mild side.
Do I recommend Sparrows? Hell yeah I’m all here for badass female characters! If you haven’t read Fliers then what are you waiting for go read it asap cause Sparrows comes in June 25th!
Fliers by author Laura Mae is the first book in the Fliers series and I had so much fun reading this book! I love reading books written by indie authors for many reason, one being that you help an indie author! another being that I always seem to find hide gems and Flies is definitely a hidden gem.
The story takes place in a world where society is split into Humans – Fliers – and Fairies. Humans don’t generally care for the Fliers or Fairies. I don’t want to spoil too much but lets just say this causes problems for the two species.
The Main character, Sydona, is of course a Flier and man let me tell you something about Syd I. Love. Her. I’ve read a couple of previous reviews on this book on goodreads (which by the way don’t sway me any which way before I pick up a book some people are too snobby when they review books and do they even realize authors have feelings?) (ANYWAYS) and a lot of people mention Syd is too naive or closed off from the world but I think that’s one of the reasons I love her so much. She just wants to chill in her house away from the world with her veggies and Fairies, whats so wrong about that? Before I get side tracked let me just move on into why I love her, regardless of being able to hide out there and do nothing about it, she chooses to do something about the situation on the book. and she’s so stinkin brave! she really is naive about certain things don’t get me wrong but it all plays into her character perfectly.
The beginning of the book felt a bit slow but that’s because there’s certain things that I realize need to play out, like certain characters coming into the story and character development so that didn’t bother me at all. You know what I loved about this book most of all? It felt genuine. The book isn’t trying hard to fit into this YA fantasy-fairy world that I feel like it keeps getting repeated over and over again. It is it’s own story set in pretty normal times with a character who is her genuine self.
Let me not forget that when it does pick up and there’s action and fighting this Laura Mae KILLED. IT. (In a good way, if you don’t get my enthusiasm) Syd is a bad ass and I love her and I’ll fight anyone for her. I love the mix of characters in this story too! There are different ages and backgrounds and they mix in super well. This book was honestly so fun for me to read and it only took me a little bit longer than usual to read because I read the E-book and I had a two day migraine episode 😦 But I totally give this book 4 stars out of 5 and recommend it to anyone who loves Ya fantasy!
Fliers is out now so definitely go read it! and get ready because book two is coming out soon!!!
Let me start by telling you guys that I am a complete fool. The reason I say this is because when I bought this book at the Miami Book Fair 2018, I got it signed by D.E Night…and I didn’t even realize it until I had walked away. Complete. Fool.
The Crowns of Croswald! Wow what a fun book, and book two is already out! If you loved Harry Potter trust me you’re gonna love this series. First the world building, the world building in this series is incredible. Its all very well thought out and the nature of magic and the history of it in this book is such a cool interesting take on all things magic. Ivy lovely as a character is a perfect middle grade character, she’s fun, she’s brave, even a bit naive but that’s okay because she’s so young but you can already tell she’s gonna be a kick ass adult.
Not to mention what dragged me to this book is how freaking beautiful it is! I’m absolutely in love with the cover and the inside too everything about this book feels very well put together and concrete. D.E. Night is a freaking incredible author and she loves her followers just as much as her book, she’s super interactive on social media and honestly super nice.
I don’t want to spoil much about this book but it has a lot of adventure and running and Ivy being thrown into the world of croswald feels like you’re being flung in there with her. I’m supper excited to read book two but this one is definitely a 5 star book to me!
Where do I start with this one. I have to admit this trilogy was tough for me to go through mainly because you have such a good villain like The Darkling and then you have Alina as the main character. I know, I know a lot of people love her and don’t get me wrong I do love her for a couple reasons but as a main character facing up against THE DARKLING (darkness personified, strongest Grisha, creator of the fold, the dark heretic I can keep going,,) she felt very bland.
Shadow and Bone provided some sense of adventure which is the main reason why I finished it and I genuinely love Aline and the Darkling. Not Mal with his stupid ‘ I see you now Alina’ crap. Like oh sorry now that you’re a super strong grisha I’m suddenly in love with you?? Get outta here with that crap. sorry Sorry Mal just makes me mad. ANYWAYS, I think Shadow and Bone would get a 4 stars on its own just for giving me a character like The Darkling.
I would say Siege and storms was the most difficult one for me and I cannot stress this enough I HATE the apparat. Why is he even a character?! if a snake turned into a person it would be him, I hated that guy so much. Thank goodness for Nikolai he’s honestly what saved the series for me. Oh and Tamar and Toyla I love them so much. Siege and Storms gets 2.5 stars out of 5 form me, sorry guys.
Last, Ruin and Rising. This book..THIS book. It had me so up and down. Alina finally showing some backbone and taunting the Darkling was probably my favorite thing. By the time I got to this book though I was so done with amplifiers and Mal and The apparat UGH I just wanted a freaking fight. This series was definitely lacking in the fight scene department. Ruin and Rising also gets three stars out of 5 on its own.
This entire review is hurting every fiber of my being because I absolutely LOVE Leigh Bardugo. Like Guys, I’ve met her she’s incredible but man The Grisha Trilogy just didn’t do it for me. It at least gave me the pathway to King of Scars (which is why I read it) I would say the series as a whole gets 3 stars from me 😦 I don’t like giving anything less than 4 but I can’t lie to my heart.
This book had me excited, yelling, terrified. Leigh Bardugo is honestly one of my favorite writers she knows just how to set up the perfect setting for a story. I’ll be the first to admit the originally 3 for the Grisha Trilogy were tough for me to read but I stuck through it because 1. Six of crows is my life. 2. Nikolai deserves for me to pull through it. SPEAKING of Nikolai I’m pretty sure this book messed my heart up completely when it comes to Nikolai. His chapters were probably my favorites even though they were politically heavy (I mean he IS the king after all) but being able to read from his point of view and perspective totally killed me.
AND ZOYA wow. W.O.W character development at its finest. I remember wanting to punch Zoya constantly in the Grisha Trilogy, now I think it was mainly cause Alina is a baby (sorry but she is) and I seem to relate a lot with Zoya’s personality (yikes?).
This book constantly kept me guessing though I honestly had no idea where it was going to go, in a good way, because it really wasn’t predictable. Did I know crazy stuff was gonna happen? I mean yeah its Leigh Bardugo she was born to wreck my life with her amazing books BUT I didn’t think in the slightest it would play out the way it did! I know some might be a little skeptical to pick this one up if you weren’t a huge fan of the grisha trilogy BUT I promise everything Leigh has written is adding up in King of Scars and WOW the dots all connect and its incredible.
Do yourself a favor and read this masterpiece, no really this book is beautiful even on the outside. King of Scars definitely gets 5 out of 5 stars from me. Its out now so go get it!
Wicked freaking Saints, wow. I have never read such a dark almost Gothic fantasy like this ever. I had so much fun reading this book from beginning to end, there was a single moment I wasn’t thinking about this book since i started it.
I got an ARC of this book Via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Everything about this felt so concrete and well written : The characters and character development, The plot, The world building, and the questions left unanswered in this book felt like they were left unanswered only for now.
I would kill for a map of the world in this series, I read the E-book so I’m not sure if the published version has one but if it doesn’t it definitely should going forward. Let me not forget to mention that Nadya is such a fun character to read – shes brave but not stupid or irrational, regardless of how she was raised to think she is still her own person and not blinded by stubbornness. Honestly she’s everything I want in a main character in a fantasy book.
Of course I can’t NOT mention Malachiasz. Wow Wow Wow I’m not sure how Emily Duncan managed it but she made me love his character so so much. I don’t want to give too much away so I’m just going to say his story feels like it was thought out very well and it unravels perfectly.
The story is so much fun to read of course like any YA there is playful banter between the characters and there’s a chin grab here and there because why not but over all I have no complaints about this book. I’m so happy its a trilogy because three books feels perfect for this series.
This book definitely gets 5 out of 5 stars from me and is absolutely one of my new favorites.
Wicked Saints by Emily Duncan is out now so definitely go grab a copy!
I received a copy of this book on NetGalley for an honest review.
Wow Wow Wow
Where do I even start with this book?
Spin The Dawn
Is such a special book most descriptions say‘Project Runway meets Mulan’ but it is so much more! This book was such a fun read and I won’t include any spoilers but the character development in this book is A+ to be completely honest.
Maia, the main character, is already a strong character when the book starts she just gets even better as the adventure unravels.
and lets not forget the writing style is just beautiful its very fun and definitely a YA book but it also feels very elegantly written. I can tell you that as soon as this book comes out I will be buying it (its such a beautiful book think about how it’ll look up on a shelf) and re reading it.
Spin The Dawn by Elizabeth Lim is the first in The Blood of Stars series and comes out July 9th so go an preorder it!!
